Another TV in a Box

Lord knows we have plenty to do around the house, pretty much always, so in the name of making the best of the current situation (day 32 of quarantine) we have been tying up loose ends on projects that we started, but hadn’t quite finished over the past year, one of which is a TV cabinet. Remember the Outdoor TV cabinet we made for our first house? Well, new house, new outdoor TV cabinet needed.

Alright, SO around the time we wrapped up the pool but before we began the shed and chicken coop, we got the TV hung on the exterior wall to the right of the doors. We had pre-selected this location long ago and had all of the electrical/cable hooked up when we were doing the lighting for the outdoor kitchen.

Right after this, Lot was born and while we had every intention of getting this TV boxed in, he just hung there, totally exposed for months. We managed to prioritize both the shed and the chicken coop before we got around to getting this poor little guy a home of his own. Finally, last summer, we got started on boxing him in. The first step was to, well, create a box .

To create the box we started by measuring the TV. We wanted the housing to be a little bigger than the TV, but as you can see there wasn’t room for it to be too much bigger, so the width was pretty much pre-determined. As for the depth, we knew the TV was on a mount so it could be pulled out and swiveled for ease of viewing, so we took the TV + mount into consideration as we decided on the final depth.

It fit like a glove!

Next up, we went to work making doors. We cut 4 equal slab doors and put them on bi-fold hinges. Just like, our last TV cabinet, the idea was for the doors to fold back when in use for optimal viewing. We painted the cabinet + the doors in the same taupe color as the house.

A lock was also added to the front for good measure. I mean, he did hang out in the open with no issues, but we didn’t want to push our luck. Once we got to this point we stalled out again. No clue why, life I guess, but like this the cabinet sat for months….bald, only lacking a roof.

Well, a few Saturdays ago, thanks to quarantine we were able to get this bad boy finished. Lucky us - we had leftover roofing material from the shed, so Brent took some measurements and made some cuts.

And got it installed.

Once the roof was installed, Brent cut and I painted a wood piece to sit at the back of the roof where it meets the house to act as an added barrier for rain. And then…..

We were done!! It’s a small little check mark but really does make the TV feature feel more complete. 10 points for anyone that can spot the eggs in this picture. I laid them down to free my hands to take this shot and they ended up in the picture. Happy accidents :)
